Item: TheTraute Sarnow aground at Gurnard's Head, July 1954
Description: The Traute Sarnow was a 200 ton German cargo vessel which was wrecked off Gurnard's Head on 25 July 1954 whilst en route from Cardiff to Ostend. All six members of the crew were rescued but the vessel was badly holed and a salvage operation was considered impossible. The ship broke up within a matter of days and for a short while she became a tourist attraction. Taken at low water, this view shows her stern tight against the rocks with 45 degree list to port. The remorseless westerly swell has driven her stern around to the east, but from this angle her hull and superstructure appear still relatively intact.
