Item: A tropical area of the grounds of York House when it was the West Cornwall School
Description: A sub-tropical corner of the gardens at York House, West Cornwall School, Penzance. In 1884 the West Cornwall College, a Methodist School for Girls, opened in Chapel Street, Penzance, where many buildings, including a gymnasium, were used for most of the school's life. In 1929, York House at St Clare became the main building and in 1939 a new block was built for Juniors. This was demolished to build the new fire station in the early 1970s. After the school's closure in 1967, the buildings were taken over by what became known as Penwith District Council. This picture taken in the gardens is one of a charming series of postcards taken to show the quality of school life. It is believed that the site is that of the legendary Chapel of St Clare.
