Item: 'The Bay of Panama' wrecked just south of Nare Point, The Lizard, Cornwall.
Description: A photograph of the wreck of the 'Bay of Panama' wrecked just south of Nare Point, The Lizard early on 10 March 1891 in the blizzard of 1891. The captain, his wife, the cook and four apprentices were washed overboard. The rest took to the rigging where several froze to death of fell off. By 9am, a breeches buoy line was set up and 17 of the 40 crew were rescued. Nare Point is on the south side of the Helford. The 'Bay of Panama' of 2.282 tons was launched by Harland & Wolff of Belfast in 1883. She was from Calcutta (18.11.1890) for Dundee
