Item: Gwavas Quay, Newlyn
Description: View of Gwavas Quay, Newlyn. When this lithograph was made there was no causeway linking the east and west sides of Newlyn. The village we know today was therefore divided into the two separate communities of Street an Nowan and Newlyn, which were only connected by a beach at low tide. In order to travel between the two parts of the village at all other times it was necessary to use a ferry boat, or, to take a long detour inland via Paul hill. This early view shows a woman crossing at low tide. A causeway between the two communities was finally built in 1908.
