Identification
Item: St. Mary's Chapel, Penzance, 25th June, 1832
Description: View of St. Mary's Chapel in Penzance. St Mary's Chapel was a "chapel of ease", as Penzance was part of the parish of Madron, and not a parish in it's own right. The exact date of the building of the chapel is not known, but there was a known place of worship on the site by the end of the fourteenth century. Local records state that when the Spaniards raided Mount's Bay in 1595, St. Mary's Chapel was spared because Catholic mass had previously been performed in the building. When it was demolished in 1832, a temporary church was set up at Alverton until the new St. Mary's Church was opened in 1836.
