A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: Folly

Description: Engraving by J S Prout, printed and published by J P Vibert of Penzance on October 26th 1831. Folly House on the left is said to be the oldest house in Penzance, pre-dating the Spanish invasion. It was demolished in the 1950s. Lying at the bottom of what in 2014 is Cornwall Terrace, this area, a few yards from the sea, is regularly flooded by high tides. In the 1880s it was an industrialised area with Michael Colliver’s lime furnace and various potteries. John Trezize worked one of these and samples his work are the jug and the pot he made for Elizabeth Sampson PEZPH:1975.32 and 1975.33 in Penlee House Museum. The Willows Hotel complained of the pollution caused by these industries and they were closed down. Examples of clay pipes made here may be found locally.
