Item: The Library in York House, the former West Cornwall College at St Clare, Penzance
Description: In 1884 the West Cornwall College, a Methodist School for Girls, opened in Chapel Street Penzance where many buildings, including a gymnasium, were used for most of the school's life. In 1929, York House at St Clare became its home and in 1939 a new block was built for Juniors. This was demolished to build the new fire station in the early 1970s. After the school's closure in 1967, the buildings were taken over by what became known as Penwith District Council. This picture of the Library in York House, is one of a charming series of postcards taken to show the quality of school life. Note the bowl of anemones, like the flowers in the picture of the Dining Hall. It is believed that the site is that of the legendary Chapel of St Clare.
