Item: York House to the right with the later extension to West Cornwall School on the left
Description: York House was the home of John Pope Vibert from 1827 unto 1865. Built by his uncle, Henry Pope, who never lived there, the house was nicknamed The Vatican. In 1884 the West Cornwall College, a Methodist School for Girls, opened in Chapel Street Penzance where many buildings, including a gymnasium, were used for most of the school's life. In 1929, York House at St Clare became its home and in 1939 a new block was built for Juniors. This was demolished to build the new fire station in the early 1970s. After the school's closure in 1967, the buildings were taken over by what became known as Penwith District Council. This picture is one of a charming series of postcards taken to show the quality of school life. It is believed that the site is that of the legendary Chapel of St Clare.
