Item: Mount's Bay Luggers and other fishing boats working down the River Esk in Whitby Harbour
Description: The first and third of these three boats are Penzance registered luggers. The middle boat is a ketch rigged fishing boat. All would have been using Whitby as a temporary base during the Autumn North Sea herring season. In the 1860s to 1890s dozens of Mount's Bay luggers made the voyage up to Scotland and down the east coast following the autumn herring migration. They were well received at Whitby where their good behaviour and hymn singing was often commented upon favourably.
