Item: Cicely of Penzance wearing Crysede
Description: The caption on the photograph reads Cicely of Penzance. Possibly the lady was a model or a member of staff of Crysede Ltd which made silk garments. Examples of these can be found at the Penlee House Museum. Alec Walker, a talented artist and textile designer, and his wife Kay established Crysede in Newlyn just after the First World War. It produced fashionable fine silk fabrics from his own designs which were very popular in that era. The company moved to premises near the Island in St Ives in 1925. Some Newlyn workers continued with the company, travelling daily to St Ives.
