Item: Lelant Station c.1880, with unidentified people adjacent to the Broad Gauge track.
Description: Unidentified people stood adjacent to the Broad Gauge track, opposite the signal, at Lelant station, c.1880. The St Ives Branch Line was completed in 1877 with stations at St Erth, Lelant, Carbis Bay and St Ives. Carbis Bay was renamed from Broad Gauge in 1892. The name Carbis Bay was invented by Great Western Railway. Before 1877, travellers to St Ives alighted at St Ives Road Station and travelled to St Ives by horse bus. The quay right in the image, was known as Brewery Quay. To the right of the signal, stooks stand in a field now covered by housing.
