Identification

Item: T.B Wilton, Ironmonger (late Roberts), 18 Market Jew Street, Penzance.

Description: In 1899, J.H. Roberts retired at 18 Market Jew Street and his ironmongery business was passed on to T.B. Wilton. Thomas Wilton's family were from Redruth where his brother already had an ironmongery on Fore Street. This photograph must have been taken in 1899 (or a couple of years later) because the signage still refers to 'late Roberts'. This reference was dropped in newspapers after 1903. Thomas Wilton died suddenly in 1920 aged 53. He would therefore have been in his early 30s in this photograph. It seems most likely that he is on the second left with his assistant, Walter Nicholls to the right. His premises now house "The Works".
