Item: E.H. Bostock's Menagerie arriving for the Corpus Christi Fair, 1891.
Description: A photograph of E.H. Bostock's Menagerie arriving by horse drawn carriage at the Princess May Recreation Ground, Penzance, or adjacent fields, for the Corpus Christi Fair of 1891. The gathering on the right might be local dignatories. This was the first visit to West Cornwall of Bostock's Menagerie exhibiting at Marazion on 27 May; Penzance during Corpus Christi Fair and at St Just on 1 June. An advertisement for the arrival of the menagerie appeared in the Cornish Guardian on 28 May 1891 and stated "this was a first visit of this new a colossal establishment consisting of 16 monster carriages and 400 beasts, birds and reptiles and two of the greatest Animal Trainers on record".
