Item: PH 269 'Canterbury Bell', aground behind Penzance Lighthouse Pier. Friday 24 April 1891
Description: The 'Canterbury Bell' PH 269 was built at Rye, Sussex by J.C. Hoad for George Coles of 4 Hoe Gardens, Plymouth. She was 75.2ft registered length with a 20.2ft beam and 9.25ft depth of hold. She grounded leaving Penzance Harbour on 24 April 1891. (Cornishman 30 April 1891). An anchor was put out by "hobblers" and she was warped off using her steam capstan. She had already been dismasted during the blizzard of 1891 (9th-13th March). No doubt the cost of additional repairs led to her sale to Calstock owners as a coaster in June 1891 until she was wrecked at Wemyss Bay, Fife on 29 December 1908.
