A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: SS 'Lyonesse' alongside the Lighthouse Pier, Penzance.

Description: The SS 'Lyonesse' alongside the Lighthouse Pier, Penzance, with a G.W.R. horse drawn van and large pile of fish baskets on the pier. The SS 'Lyonesse' launched by Harveys of Hayle for the West Cornwall Steam Ship Co in 1889. 329 gross registered tons. Length 170ft. Beam 25.1 ft. Draught 10.4ft. In June 1900 she hit a rock while leaving St Mary's; In June 1914 she assisted the Belgian steamer 'Gothland'; In 1919 the 'Lyonesse' was sold to Cobh, Ireland as a salvage ship before returning to Hayle in May 1928 to be scrapped.
