Identification
Item: Newlyn Harbour, Cornwall
Description: A photograph of Newlyn Harbour with mackerel boats on moorings and three masted schooners alongside the North Pier. The North Pier was completed in 1894. In bad weather the harbour was subject to strong surges so the luggers were on moorings. On 7 April 1899, thirteen luggers were washed out of the harbour in a NW storm. The problem was solved by extending the South Pier, completed in 1915. From then boats could moor up alongside the North Pier.
