Identification
Item: Gutting fish
Description: Two jousters and a fish-wife gutting the catch in the courtyard of a cottage in Newlyn. The unknown lady and man standing to the right picking pilchards (fairmaids) out of a wicker basket, which is placed on a table. The man to the left uses an instrument to press the fish into a wooden barrel, wearing waterproof trousers and a soft-brimmed hat. The woman wears an apron, shawl and similar soft-brimmed hat. The pilchards were salted down and pressed into barrels, much of the catch being sent to Italy.
Condition: Good - very slight foxing to the top edge of the photograph.
