Identification
Item: Newlyn Street Scene c.1890
Description: Newlyn Street Scene c.1890 – looking uphill from the foot of St. Peter’s Hill, a rough unpaved roadway which leads away left, with a cobbled street straight above between cottages. A bowler-hatted man and girl pose for the photographer. The girl is nearest to the camera, and on the ground beside her is a metal churn, used for collecting water. Behind the man, who may well be a fisherman, a flight of granite steps leads to first floor living accommodation – typically over a small fish curing cellar. On the street behind him are larger granite sets, which surround a water-shoot, one of many such which were the only sources of drinking and washing water in Newlyn prior to the early 1900s.
Condition: Good - Discolouration to the top and left edges of the photograph.
