Identification
Item: Three steam warships off Penlee Point
Description: The two funnelled torpedo gunboat was of Sharpshooter, Alarm or Hazard Class. HMS Spanker was of the early 1890 Sharpshooter class and was a fishery patrol ship in the early 20th century. Alongside is a 3 masted steam gunboat with one funnel and square yards on its foremast. Some RN gunboats retained sails until the late 19th century in order to give them a longer range for colonial policing. After the Newlyn riots of 1896 the gunboats HMS Curlew and Traveller and the destroyer HMS Ferret were sent to Mounts Bay. From that time, a fishery protection vessel, usually a torpedo gunboat was stationed off Newlyn. From 1902, fisher protection vessels were mainly concerned with controlling the French crabbers.
Condition: Good - slight discolouration to the left and right edges of the photograph and a very small amount of foxing to the top half.
