Identification
Item: Newlyn Harbour as it looked about 1880
Description: Cornish luggers moored at low tide with Newlyn South Pier to the right. Left to right they are 'PZ. 388', 'PZ. 506', '120 PZ.' and 'PZ. 41'. The Queen of the Bay PZ388, 1875 to 1885 was 43’ long, lengthened by 4’ and active from 1887 to 1899; PZ506 Lady of the Lake was 1871 to 1905 and had a hand capstan; PZ120 Alexandria 1869 to 1905 was 44’ long; PZ41 Dart 1869 to 1899 was 40’ long. The boats are drying their sails and nets on deck for the weekend. This avoided them heating up and combusting spontaneously. Five men stand in a group to the right in the foreground wearing typical fishermen clothing of the period, possibly they are playing marbles - see A Lanyon's 1979 St Ives album, picture 28.
Condition: Good - small amount of foxing along the edges of the photograph. Slight discolouration to the bottom edge.
