Item: Porth Slip, Newlyn
Description: This is an everyday summer scene in Newlyn with fishermen watching the photographer, and a number of nets draped over the rails above Porth Slip, Newlyn. Opposite are Garfield House and the Red Lion. Widened in the 20th century, the well paved slip leads to the beach within Old Quay from where the pilchard drivers put to sea. A number of boats are on the slip, Jarret D which was not a local boat and the Alexandra a 70 ton sailing coaster owned by Martin Mathews of Penzance and registered from 1869 to 1879.
