Identification

Item: The Miller a Bosava

Description: This is a photograph of the miller, Sampson Hosking and his sisters and a child at the water mill at Bosava, Lamorna. The women both wear white aprons and wide-brimmed hats, the child wears a white smock. The man wears a bowler hat and holds a long turned stick. Behind them is the mill wheel. The wheel of the water mill dates from the 1880s. The tree to the left was still there in 2010. Kemyel Mill is part of the ancient Manor of Kemyl and Bosava which name derives from the Cornish Bos Kes Lavas meaning the 'home of summer heat'. It has been occupied by the Hoskin or Hosking family since the early fourteenth century. Possibly there has been a mill at Lamorna since the thirteenth century. There are mill stones in the mill of a lower mill and original higher mill carved with the initials SH 1674. The property was acquired by the St Aubyn family. In the 1910s A J Munnings rented the mill for his studio. The upper mill was used regularly until 1921. The land surrounding the mill was first used for mixed farming before being used for growing flowers, particularly early daffodils and potatoes which could be transported to markets via the railway in Penzance. The Hoskings became flower growers when farmers in the area started milling for themselves.

Condition: Good - slight discolouration to the top edge of the photograph.
