Identification

Item: Queen's Hotel, Penzance

Description: Queen's Hotel, Penzance, which was built in 1861-1862 following the connection with the national railway system. The designer was the Borough Surveyor John Matthews. By 1873 it had been enlarged, entirely re-arranged and possessed every modern improvement. The original building was from the Mount's Bay Hotel to the third set of bay windows in the picture; the addition, known as Queen's building to the left. It was named after the visit of Queen Victoria. The promenade, built in 1844, had been improved and was subsequently surfaced with tarmac. Transport in the picture seems to be by bicycle, horse and carriage, and motor car. A sailing boat, rowing boat and canoe grace the water on this Summer's day. To the left of the railings is a small jetty especially for the clients of the hotel.
