Item: Penzance, The Scillonian
Description: RMS Scillonian was built for the Isles of Scilly Steamship company by the Ailsa Shipbuilding company of Troon in Scotland in 1926. She weighed 436 tons gross, was 177 feet long with a draught of 10 and a half feet and a speed of 13 knots. She had steam reciprocating engines and could carry 390 passengers plus 165 tons of cargo. Costing £25,000 she was built at a bargain price during the depression. She arrived on Scilly on 25 January 1926. She was renamed the Peninnis in 1955 before the arrival of the Scillonian 11 in 1956. The note below is a poem penned presumably for her maiden voyage.
