Identification

Item: Scobles Ice Cream Wagon, Penzance

Description: A view of a barrow style ice cream wagon with canopy announcing 'Scobles Ices' which might be parked at the entrance to the Lighthouse Pier, Penzance. A man and two boys seem to be posed in the background. Mrs Helen Scoble was a grocer at 62 Daniel Place, listed in 1926, 1935 and 1939. It's possible that the ice cream was a side line for the shop. Ice could be obtained from the nearby harbour to line a wooden flasket into which a bowl could be placed to chill. Constant mixing of egg yolks, sugar with milk or cream would then produce ice cream to which flavours could be added. This would be served in a glass with a spoon, known as a 'penny lick'.
