Item: The SS Western Front on fire, 1921
Description: Dense smoke from the US registered steamship the 5,743 gross ton Western Front, is seen here following an explosion and fire. She was carrying napthan and turpentine. The crew took to the lifeboats and were all rescued. St Mary's motor lifeboat Elise was launched with Penninis,the new ferry to the mainland. SS British Earl stood by and picked up survivors. The captain, Master Richard O'Brien said she was 20 miles WSW of the Bishop, the lifeboat recorded 7 miles WSW.
