A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: SS Umbre wrecked at Greeb Point, Pendeen

Description: The shipwreck of SS Umbre which struck Greeb Point, Pendeen on 20th February 1899. All the crew abandoned ship in two lifeboats. The Mate's boat landed at Portheras Cove and the crew had breakfast in the Commercial Hotel in St. Just. The other lifeboat contained the Captain, two officers, nine sailors, the stewardess and the ship's dog, cat and parrot. They were all rescued by the Brixham trawler Evangelist and landed at Newlyn. SS Umbre was recently built, at Newcastle in 1898, for the Cork Steamship Company. Sailing from Liverpool to Rotterdam with general cargo, she was lost due to navigational error. Pendeen lighthouse was not then built.
