Identification

Item: Shipwreck of the French schooner 'Espiegle' at Tol Pedn, Porthcurno in 1912

Description: The French schooner 'Espiegle' (translation: 'Mischievous imp') wrecked at Tol Pedn west of Porthcurno on 14th October 1912. 'Espiegle' of Treguier had left Brest for the U.K. with a cargo of pit props, probably bound for South Wales. One 13 year old lost his life and the rest of the crew and their dog survived, climbing onto a rock and rescued from there by the Coastguard with breeches buoy and cliff ladders. The wreck vanished for about a fortnight and then a gale spread her cargo of pit props around Mount's Bay. The same night of this shipwreck the steamer 'Abertay' was wrecked at St. Loy alongside the steamer 'South America' which had been wrecked 7 months before.
