Item: The 'Bessie', Carbis Bay, Cornwall
Description: The 'Bessie' was wrecked in the celebrated 'Cintra Gale' of 17 November 1893. Three elderly steam colliers the 'Cintra' of Liverpool (Newport for Dartmouth); 'Vulture' of Cardiff (for Dartmouth) and 'Bessie' (Cardiff for Portland) sheltered in St Ives Bay and were wrecked on Carbis Bay Beach after the gale veered from West to North. The steamer 'Rosedale' was also wrecked on Porthminster Beach. The 'Bessie' was built by Harveys of Hayle in 1865 and sold to James Richards of Penarth in 1889. The 'Bessie' had previously wrecked on 11 January 1866. Her crew were rescued by the Penzance lifeboat 'Richard Lewis' brought from Penzance on her carriage.
