Item: Operation Verity 1949
Description: View from the old Telephone Exchange in Princes Street showing the assembly of nearly 200 ships in Mount's Bay from 30 June to 4 July 1949. The ships sailed away unexpectedly on the last night. The Western Union Fleet comprised British, French, Dutch and Belgian ships under the supreme command of Admiral Sir Roderick McGregor, C.I.C. of the Home Fleet. More than 100 men of war took part. This is one of a series of photographs Harry Penhaul took for the Western Morning News. The Scillonian 1 is moored on Extension Pier. T.H.V.Satellite is in the inner harbour.
