Identification

Item: Lady of the Isles Cruise leaving Penzance harbour

Description: A photograph of passengers embarked on the M.V. 'Lady of the Isles' for an evening cruise around Mounts Bay which cost 5/- for adults and children were half price. At a fairly low state of the tide, the launch is moored alongside the furthest set of steps on the Extension Pier, down near the lighthouse. The low angle and direction of the sun indicate the time of day, and some passengers are wearing light clothing indicating a summer's evening. The 'steward' in his white cap and navy uniform, stands near the boarding point, as he would have helped passengers across the gap. The 'Lady of the Isles' was a 68 foot motor launch, built by R.A. Newman & Sons of Poole, in 1947, and propelled by twin Gardner diesel engines. Built for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Co, she was employed by them as an excursion vessel during the summers of 1948,1949 & 1950. Her passenger licence ran for four or five months each year, terminating on October 31st. She was licenced to carry 109 passengers and 4 crew. The venture was not a financial success and the launch was not suitable for winter work in the islands. She was sold to French owners in 1952.
