A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Identification

Item: Wrecks in Bay, St Ives

Description: A postcard with the script 'Wrecks in Bay, St Ives' on the front, posted 11 December 1908. 'Lizzie R. Wilce' of Falmouth, (nearest) and 'Mary Barrow' of Barrow. About 9pm on 7 January 1908, 'Lizzie R. Wilce', from Swansea for St Malo with anthracite, grounded on Porthminster Beach and her crew were rescued by the lifeboat James Stevens No.10. Around 4.40am the following morning, the lifeboat was called out to the schooner Mary Barrow from Swansea for Cowes with coal. The crew were also rescued by the lifeboat. The 'Mary Barrow' was refloated on 14 January. Later owned by Captain Peter Mortensen of Truro, she was wrecked in 1938. The 'Lizzie R. Wilce was also refloated and later served as a coal hulk.
