Identification
Item: Old St Ives
Description: Fishermen's houses with outside steps; fish cellars at the ground floor. Cellar doors had to be wide enough to take a hogshead pilchard barrel. Seine fishermen were paid by a share of the catch and salted and pressed their own fish. When drift net fishing replaced seining, the cellars were used for storing and mending nets.
