Item: A view of St Ives Harbour from Smeaton's Pier in the 1920s
Description: Tinted postcard of St Ives Harbour from near the top of Smeaton's Pier around 1924. In the foreground are 4 ex sailing gigs fitted with motors. Several were fitted with centre boards, an unusual feature for fishing boats. These motor boats were still allowed to race in the annual August sailing regatta, provided their propellers were removed. The Richard Williams was renamed Highflyer after HMS Highflyer sank the German armed liner Kaiser Wilhelm der Gross in 1914. Many Cornish reservists served in the Highflyer, an elderly cruiser.
