Item: Mrs Nicholls, 3 South Terrace, Penzance. Apartments.

Description: Mrs Nicholls was the widow of Captain James Nicholls, Master Mariner. She obviously needed to secure an income from taking in lodgers when the postcard was printed. In 2013 it is the third house from the corner of Queen Street, the Lugger Hotel having taken over certain adjacent housing. This terrace was known as Captains' Row because it housed many retired sea captains who would enjoy the direct view of the shipping in Mount's Bay. It looks to be a delightful double fronted house with an upstairs bay window, painted porch and a tropical garden with two neat lawns and seating. The open casement windows suggest a warm day. Mrs Nicholls is standing in the doorway wearing a pale blouse and a long dark skirt. The 1901 census records that Elizabeth Nicholls, aged 48, lived here with her three children aged between 18 and 26. There were two boarders, three visitors and a resident housemaid.
