Item: Penzance Promenade and Winter Gardens, pre 1911

Description: The view along the Promenade and Winter Gardens, at low tide, shows the Queen's Hotel in the background with Folly House to the right of a marquee which would be erected here every summer for live entertainment and cinema. Described as 'The Hut', here it is called the Winter Gardens. The whole area was given by the Bolithos for the purpose of recreation for the people of Penzance. After a few years of lobbying, the Grand Pavilion or Winter Gardens were built on this site in 1911, opened in 1912 and in 2012 provides housing, a laundry, bowling alley and an amusement arcade. It was one of the first buildings in Penzance to benefit from electricity. The lamp in the bottom right of the picture marked the entrance to Alexandra Road. The lantern part in 2012 can be found outside the Morrab Road Library whilst the plinth is built into the entrance to the Mennaye Field Football Ground in Alexandra Road. The middle section of lawn on the left seems to be used for croquet or some such sport. The figure in the foreground seems to be wearing Edwardian dress complete with a straw hat.
