Description: A photograph taken to celebrate the award of first prize to John Smith for his Fisherman's Boots at the Fisheries Exhibition at Penzance in September 1884. John Smith came to Penzance from Royton, Oldham in about 1876 and set up his bootmaking business at No.12 Causewayhead. Adverts from the time emphasise the durability and cheapness of his products. In particular, an advert from 7 January 1880 boasts that he employs more men than any other bootmaker in Penzance. This photograph probably bears that claim out as there are 22 workers in view. Another advert gives the additional information that all the work is done on the premises so this scene would have been behind the main shop at 12 Causewayhead. Later in 1885, John Smith also opened a shop at 12 Market Jew Street. Copies of the adverts are attached.
