Identification
Item: Bethesda Hill, St Ives with mackerel boats in the harbour.
Description: View of mackerel boats in the harbour from the top of Bethesda Hill, St Ives. Bethesda hill is between the Wharf and Island Square. There are two explanations for its name: it is named for a little chapel which once stood here. A meeting was held in this chapel in 1870 to establish a new Band of Hope Society. Charlie Paynter the blind Town Cryer sometimes preached here. The second explanation is that John 5:2 (in the Bible) refers to Bethesda in Jerusalem which had 5 porches. Bethesda Hill had 5 porches, hence its name.
