Description: Penlee House was built about 1864 by J R Branwell for his family. He was a local businessman and benefactor. His son, John, took many photographs of the family, house and grounds from the 1880s and his collection is housed in the Penlee House Museum. In 1946, backed by public subscription, Penzance Borough Council purchased the house and grounds to serve as a memorial to the service people and civilians who had been killed during World War Two.
