Item: SS Spes loading china clay in Penzance Dock
Description: The steamship SS Spes is moored alongside the western wharf of Penzance Dock adjacent to the English China clays Lovering and Pouchin sheds. She was the first ship to load china clay at Penzance directly for the USA. A steam wagon is waiting to discharge its load and a crane is transferring the clay from the wagons to the ship. The clay was probably from the Balswidden Works at St Just.
