Item: Utter desolation as the beautiful Bolitho Gardens lie in ruins
Description: The calm aftermath of the storm in which impossibly high seas pounded Mounts Bay in what became known as the Ash Wednesday storm, 1962. The beautiful Bedford Bolitho Gardens were destroyed. The arch in the picture would soon be demolished to join the pile of rubble it dominates here. Under the control of the Borough Surveyor, Peter Tresidder, repairs were effected so that Penzance would be open for the summer season. He commissioned E Ford to take a set of photographs and there is a set of Richard Brothers pictures commissioned by the Penzance Council.
