Item: The Ash wednesday Storms of 1962
Description: This photograph was probably taken on 7 March 1962 in heavy rain. The promenade opposite the Marine Hotel was completely ripped away; the railings would follow in the night's storms. A lampost lies against the railings; Reg Richards stands at the edge of the crater and a broom lies idely in the rain. Under the control of the Borough Surveyor, Peter Tresidder and with full backing from Cornwall county Council, repairs were effected so that Penzance would be open for the summer season. This is one of a series of photographs of the Richard Brothers commissioned by the Council to record the event. The Borough Surveyor commissioned E Ford to take a separate set of photographs.
