Item: The Ash Wednesday storm below Captain's Row
Description: Stormy seas have breached the promenade at Penzance. You can see that railings have snapped and been pulled onto the beach below Captain's Row. Under the control of the Borough Surveyor, Peter Tresidder, repairs were effected so that Penzance would be open for the summer season. This is one of a series of photographs of the Richards Brothers commissioned by the Council to record the event. The Borough Surveyor commissioned E Ford to take a separate set of photographs. A report had appeared in the Cornwishman of 4 January to the effect that workmen had found holes in the foundation of the promenade due to recent gales. The beach at the eastern end had been scraped right down to the clay.
