Item: Just a taster of the storm damage to come - Ash Wednesday 1962
Description: The whole of the surface of the promenade has been removed. As onlookers watch, the process of cleaning up was started; a compressor stands in front of the hotel. The Queen's Hotel looks intact as does the bandstand. Of interest, there seems to be a ship close to shore and is that the remains of the Queen's Hotel slipway on the beach. When used, it faced straight out to sea. The basement of the hotel flooded and adjacent cottages had to be demolished because of the flood damage. The Belisha beacon at the bottom of Morrab Road survived, but not its partner on the promenade.
