Item: The Lapwing is transporting World War I military personnel to the Isles of Scilly
Description: The Lapwing, a Glasgow Steamer, was in Penzance at the time of the 1919 post war celebrations because she had been chartered by the Ministry of War Transport from the Clyde Cargo Steamers Ltd during the first world war, managed by the Hain Steamship Company of St Ives, for the Penzance to Scilly Royal Mail Service. She sailed from Penzance to Scilly to Plymouth and the Channel Islands. She had a valid passenger certificate from 1st August 1919 to 14 June 1920 when she ws returned to her owners. . The photo shows the Lapwing leaving Penzance with service personnel on board, possibly as relief troops for the Isles of Scilly garrison. It may be war time as a number of the passengers are on the little boat deck, some sit in the lifeboats. Note the gun mounted on the stern.
