Item: H M S 'Deerhound' leaving Penzance for the Scilly Isles
Description: This photograph depicts the R.M.S. 'Deerhound' steaming through calm water, within the Isles of Scilly, with the low land of one of the islands - possibly Tresco - in the background. With a strong following wind, carrying the smoke from her two funnels ahead and bellying the festive flag hoists, passengers crowd her decks. She is known to have worn two strings of flags on her first arrival at Penzance on 30 June 1905. The Deerhound was purchased from the the North Pier Steamship Company, Blackpool, in 1905 and acted as a reserve to the Lyonnesse on the Penzance to Scilly Isles run. She was also used for excursions to Falmouth. She was sold by the West Cornwall Steamship Company after two seasons and went to Canada as a mail tender.
