Item: Crown Mine, part of the Botallack Group
Description: Botallack as we know it is probably an amalgamation of several small mines. In 1721 a lease to work the land there was granted by Lord Falmouth. In about 1815 a shaft was sunk from Crowns Rocks and a pumping engine was installed. Steven Harvey James bought the mine and became purser in 1836. The mine struggled to find new ore deposits. In 1842 a rich copper lode was discovered. It was due largely to the tenacity of SHJ that the mine began to expand its workings. By 1865 300 men, 116 women and 115 boys were employed. Tin production was at its highest through the 1860s. By 1874 the Crowns section was all but worked out and in 1875 tin prices fell. A new lease was granted by Lord Falmouth in 1906 but work was ceased in 1914.
