Identification
Item: The Banjo, Looe, Cornwall.
Description: A photograph of Looe Banjo Pier, and coastline, including the Church of St Mary (1882 to 1980s). Looe Pier was a prototype for many similar structures. It was designed by Joseph Thomas (1838-1901), also the engineer of the Looe-Liskeard Railway and built by Daniel Taylor in 1897. The original breakwater was a groyne. The harbour silted up causing problems for visiting vessels. Joseph Thomas asserted that his banjo shaped breakwater would solve the problem and offered to pay its expenses if it failed. (it was a success).
