Identification
Item: Samuel Gaved, St Blazey Butcher, c. 1890
Description: A photograph of Samuel Gaved at the back of his horse-drawn butcher's van. Mr Gaved was a butcher from St Blazey who took his wares out to the neighbouring villages. Unfortunately his business ran into financial difficulties and in 1892 he was found drowned at Par beach. It was reported that he had appeared rather quiet and depressed in recent days but it was doubted that he would have committed such a rash action as to take his own life. An open verdict was recorded at the inquest (Royal Cornwall Gazette 18.2.1892).
