A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Item: Actors from The Merchant of Venice and As You Like it during the Shakespearean Festival in Penzance in 1948

Description: Ernest Peirce."The man who brought Shakespeare to Cornwall" had organised successful Shakespearean plays, initially in Penzance and then later all over Cornwall for a number of years before World War Two. With the blessing and support of Penzance Corporation, in 1948 he reintroduced the seasonal plays which attracted average audiences of 800 people. The Festival ceased on his death in 1952.
